However, according to infectious disease experts, hospitals continue to record numerous severe complications in children, including necrotising pneumonia and encephalitis.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><b>VARICELLA CAN BE TRANSMITTED BEFORE RASH ONSET<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlthough effective vaccines have long been available, <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/thanhnien.vn\/nguoi-dan-ong-nguy-kich-sau-khi-tu-dung-thuoc-truyen-dich-dieu-tri-thuy-dau-185260112112638949.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">varicella<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continues to circulate widely in Viet Nam. In 2023 alone, a significant increase in cases was recorded across many localities, from Ha Noi to other provinces and cities. The disease is caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus and is extremely contagious, particularly in crowded settings involving children such as nurseries, kindergartens, and primary schools,\u201d said Dr Do Thien Hai, Deputy Director of the Center for Tropical Diseases at the National Children\u2019s Hospital, during the scientific conference entitled \u201cVaricella \u2013 Second-Generation MAV\/06 Strain Vaccine and Updates from the World Health Organization\u201d, held on the afternoon of May 9.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">According to Dr Do Thien Hai, the varicella virus not only causes temporary immune suppression but also affects cellular immunity. When cellular immunity is impaired, children become more susceptible to secondary infections such as pneumonia and sepsis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A major concern is that infected children can already transmit the virus before the onset of <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/thanhnien.vn\/noi-ban.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rash<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Notably, several cases of necrotising pneumonia caused by secondary staphylococcal infection resulted in severe lung damage.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">\u201cSome children required treatment for several months before recovery,\u201d Dr Hai shared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><b>THE PERCEPTION THAT VARICELLA IS A MILD DISEASE NEEDS TO CHANGE<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">Associate Professor, Dr Pham Quang Thai \u2013 Deputy Head of the Department of Infectious Disease Control, National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology \u2013 stated that the community must change its perception that varicella is a mild disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">\u201cGlobally, more than 4,000 deaths from varicella are recorded each year. Some patients develop encephalitis caused by the varicella virus. However, completing the two-dose schedule can increase protection to up to 98%, reducing the risk of breakthrough varicella by 3.3 times compared with a single dose,\u201d Dr Thai explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\">Currently, the priority age group for protection is children under 10 years of age, particularly those aged 1\u20139 years, who account for the highest incidence of varicella.
