According to medical experts, varicella not only affects daily activities and learning, but can also lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and skin infections, particularly in newborns, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals.

Assoc. The disease is highly contagious and can even be transmitted during the incubation period before symptoms appear, with one infected individual capable of transmitting the disease to 12 to 18 others.

In Vietnam, varicella consistently ranks among the five most common infectious diseases. Since 2023, the number of reported cases has shown an upward trend again, highlighting the persistent risk of outbreaks if high and uniform vaccination coverage is not maintained across the community.

Currently, children under 10 years of age are considered the priority group for protection, particularly those aged 1 to 9 years, who account for the highest incidence of varicella infection. Under normal conditions, experts consider 12 months of age to be the optimal time for administration of the first vaccine dose in order to achieve an adequate immune response. Vaccination at an earlier age may result in a suboptimal immune response due to the persistence of maternally derived antibodies during the first months of life. Multiple studies have demonstrated that vaccination from 12 months of age provides significantly higher immunogenicity compared with vaccination at 9 months of age.

At the symposium, Assoc.
